Ah Australia. The country I was not able to get out of my mind for a good 3 years before finally visiting! The land down under is the perfect destination for a newbie backpacker – offering everything from open water diving in the Great Barrier Reef to trekking around Aires Rock in the desert at sunrise. Each city has a buzz and something to offer, whilst the beach towns offer a more relaxed vibe in between surfing lessons and snorkelling. Whatever your reason for going – Australia is a great place to start for a backpacker’s trip!
My excuse for jumping on a place 24hours away (not that i needed one) was to attend a friends wedding. My Aussie gal pal Mel, who I met 5 years ago in Londontown when she was living over here for a year was actually getting married to an Italian stallion. Naturally, I could not miss this for the world!
After witnessing the wedding of the year in the stunning Barossa Valley and the De leo’s headed off on their honeymoon, I went on to spend 6 weeks travelling Australia’s East Coast; Queensland, Victoria, South Wales and South Australia! Along with the wedding, the other main highlight for me was the Great ocean Road trip. Typically, this was the thing I did not plan in advance, other than knowing I wanted to do it, and on the 4 day trip from Melbourne to Adelaide i can honestly say it was the best road trip I’ve ever had.
